Anne Ishii and Angela Garbes
Bio
Anne Ishii is a writer and the Executive Director of Asian Arts Initiative, which has operated with a mission to “create community through the power of art” in Philadelphia since 1993. Anne is also the co-founder of MASSIVE GOODS—a clearinghouse of queer and feminist art from Japan. She has translated and rewritten over twenty four books and is regularly published in a variety of places, sometimes anonymously.
Angela Garbes is the author of Essential Labor (2022), called “a landmark and a lightning storm” by the New Yorker. Her first book, Like a Mother, was an NPR Best Book of the Year and finalist for the Washington State Book Award in nonfiction. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Cut, New York, and featured on NPR’s Fresh Air. Garbes, a first-generation Filipina American, lives with her family in Seattle.
