David Garland
Bio
Musician, radio host, and journalist David Garland makes and celebrates adventurous music that defies easy categorization. For decades, his New York Public Radio show Spinning On Air, now an independently produced podcast, featured interviews with a wide array of musicians, ranging from John Cage and Paul McCartney to Patti Smith and Anohni. As a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and singer, Garland has been an active member of New York’s downtown avant-garde music scene, collaborating with Christian Marclay, John Zorn, Ikue Mori, Meredith Monk, and many others. His latest project, Verdency, is four-hour-long collection of songs, recorded following his recent move to New York’s Hudson Valley. Here he discusses why creativity should be an investigative process, what he’s learned from interviewing musicians, and why making music is an ageless activity.
