Derek Nguyen is a Vietnamese-American filmmaker and playwright best known for his 2016 feature film The Housemaid, a gothic romance horror film set in 1953 Vietnam during the First Indochina War. Nguyen is currently the Director of Operations & Creative Affairs at Gamechanger Films, a film fund that finances narrative feature films directed by women. Here he discusses the various hurdles involved in getting his first feature film made, the specific struggles faced by Asian American filmmakers, the fine art of genre films, and the need to forge your own path as a new filmmaker.
