Douglas A. Martin is an American poet, a novelist, and a short story writer. His books of poetry and prose include Branwell, Your Body Figured, They Change the Subject, and Once You Go Back. In 2017 Martin published Acker, which is described as “A lyric essay written through Kathy Acker’s evocative prose, public statements, and private archives.” Here Martin discusses the difficulty of taking on the work of Kathy Acker, the ways in which his process has changed over the years, and why sometimes you have to let the work dictate its own form.
