Dr. Eve L. Ewing
Bio
Dr. Eve Ewing is a native Chicagoan, a writer, a community organizer, a scholar, and the author of Electric Arches (Haymarket, 2017), a book that showcases her work as a poet, essayist, and visual artist. Electric Arches connects the lived experiences of Black girlhood with fantastical futures and the very real past, illuminates the Chicago she has known, as well as songs she has loved. She is also a sociologist based at the University of Chicago, where her research focuses on racism, social inequality, and urban policy. Her forthcoming book When the Bell Stops Ringing: Race, History and Discourse amid Chicago’s School Closures is due out fall of 2018 from University of Chicago Press. Here she discusses not being driven by outcome and the idea that maybe you’re not bad at something, it’s just that you’re trying it before you’re ready.
