Maria Chávez

Bio

Maria Chávez is a sound artist who has developed a variety of installation and performance practices over the past two decades. In 2012, the New York-based artist wrote a how-to book about her abstract turntablism practice. In 2018, she exhibited a series of paintings and drawings under the title Topography of Sound. Last year, she released Plays, an album she made by digitally time-stretching and manipulating the surface noise of a blank vinyl. Chávez had brain surgery in 2019 and is currently recovering on medical sabbatical until 2021.
