Nathaniel Mellors

Bio

Nathaniel Mellors is an Amsterdam-based artist who creates videos, sculptures, and installations. His work employs absurdist satire to critique morality, national identity, religion, and power structures in contemporary society. Mellors writes the scripts for each of his projects, which he also directs, edits, and produces. For his recent exhibition at the New Museum, Nathaniel Mellors: Progressive Rocks, Mellors created a new environment including video projection and animatronic sculpture. Here he discusses the thought process behind his creative practice, what it means to have multiple creative lives, and why it’s best to move in unexpected directions.
