Toni Dove
Bio
Since the early 1990s, artist Toni Dove has produced hybrids of film, installation, and performance. In her work, performers and participants interact with unfolding narratives, using interface technologies such as motion sensing to “perform” on-screen avatars. Her current work is an interactive cinema and robotics installation called The Dress That Eats Souls. The piece, which uses motion capture technology to mirror the viewer’s movements, thereby “consuming” them, will be presented as part of Toni Dove: Embodied Machines, a retrospective of Dove’s interactive work, at The Ringling Museum in 2018. The exhibition will cover 20 years of interactive work in performance and installation. In March 2018, she will be lecturing as part of Pioneer Works’ MVR series. Here Dove discusses the challenges involved in working with emerging technologies and the importance of constantly reevaluating your own definition of success.
