Interview: On solving problems in real-time during a crisis

While all industries have had to deal with very specific challenges as a result of the current global health pandemic, the food and restaurant industries have been faced with particularly complicated challenges. In this TCI IRL conversation, TCI’s Senior Editor, T. Cole Rachel, talks with Ovenly founder and co-owner Agatha Kulaga and Sarah Sanneh, co-owner of Brooklyn’s Pies ‘n’ Thighs about the strategies they’ve both adopted and what they have learned in order to keep going during this tumultuous time. Recently Ovenly was the subject of a New York Times article detailing Kulaga’s experience with temporarily closing her bakery locations while trying to plan for what a post-COVID landscape might look like for both herself and her employees. While still operating, albeit in a reduced capacity, Pies ‘n’ Thighs has launched a successful “Bucket Donation” program, which provides a bucket of fried chicken and sides for the doctors, nurses, and staff at Woodhull, Presbyterian, and Wyckoff hospitals in Brooklyn.
